Can an AI receptionist transfer calls to a human? Warm, blind and what happens if nobody answers

Short answer: Yes. Most AI receptionists can pass a live call to a person, but vendors differ on the type of transfer (warm, where the receiver is briefed first, or blind, where the call is simply connected), on which plan includes it, and on what happens when nobody answers. On the vendor pages we opened in October 2026, transfer is a plan feature or an agent action with limits, not a given. Decide who should get which calls, set a fallback for when no one picks up, and test it with real calls before you rely on it.

Warm, blind and cold transfer: what the words mean

Sources do not agree on every term, so check what a given product calls each option. The common usage, per the contact-center guide we opened, is below. Blind and cold are used for the same thing.

TypeWhat happensTrade-off
Warm (attended)The first party briefs the receiver on who is calling and why, then connects the callerBetter context and fewer wrong destinations; takes longer
Blind or cold (direct)The caller is connected with no briefing, and the first party leaves the callFaster; the caller often repeats details, and an unanswered call may fall to voicemail or drop

When an AI receptionist should hand off to a person

Our view, not a regulation: put the human in the loop wherever a wrong answer is costly or the caller has signalled they want one.

  • The caller asks for a person. Treat a second ask as an instruction, not a question.
  • An emergency, such as a burst pipe, a gas smell or a crash. Route to whoever can act, and decide in advance when to send the caller to emergency services instead.
  • An angry or distressed caller. A transfer works best when the receiver already knows what went wrong.
  • Sensitive topics: a complaint, a billing dispute, a legal or medical question, a cancellation.
  • A high-value caller you have named in advance, such as a returning customer with an open job.

What happens when nobody picks up

A transfer is only as good as its fallback. A blind transfer to a phone that rings out can leave the caller in someone's voicemail with no context, or drop them. Before you go live, decide each step of the chain in writing.

  • How long the destination rings before the system gives up.
  • Whether a second person or number is tried next. Some vendors list this as a separate feature, such as trying several numbers in turn.
  • Whether the AI comes back to the caller, takes a message and tells them when to expect a call back.
  • Who gets that message, how fast (text is quicker to notice than email), and where the record lives.
  • What the caller hears if the fallback also fails.

How six vendors describe transfer, as of October 2026

This is what each vendor says on the pages we opened, not a test of how the transfers perform. Plans and wording change, so verify on each vendor's site before you buy. Where a page did not say, the table says so.

VendorWhat its pages say about transferWhat we could not tell
DialzaraIts comparison page lists blind transfers on the entry plan and warm transfers on the Pro plan, and in another place says transfers are on all plansWhich statement is current; the page contradicts itself, and its pricing page did not mention transfers
RosiePricing page lists warm transfers and live call transfers on its Scale plan (the second of three), and waterfall transfers (tries several numbers) on Growth (the third)Transfer is not listed on the entry plan we saw; confirm with Rosie
Smith.aiAI receptionist page lists warm transfers to your team on every plan, and live-agent involvement as a per-call add-onIts pricing page counts transfer destinations per plan and prices extra ones; confirm the details with Smith.ai
GoodcallHome page says transfers go to the right person with a backup if they do not pick upWhich plans include it
QuoPricing page lists call transfers from the Business plan up, not on StarterWhether its AI agent performs them; the page did not say
My AI Front DeskPricing page lists transferring a call as one of the actions its AI can take, with an action allowance by planHow many transfers the allowance covers

Concession: Smith.ai pairs its AI with a North America-based live-agent network, which Lead Friendly does not. If you want a human receptionist behind the AI, that is a real reason to look at it.

How transfer works in Lead Friendly

Our AI agent can transfer a caller to a person using transfer rules you set: who takes which calls, and when. When nobody is available, it takes a message and texts it to you. Every call opens with a disclosure that the caller is speaking with an AI, and recordings and transcripts land in the CRM.

You can keep your existing business number by forwarding it to the agent, or forward only after hours or when you do not answer. We cover that in our guide to keeping your number. Plans are on the pricing page.

A transfer test checklist

Run these from a phone that is not on your team's list, so the call behaves like a stranger's.

  1. 1

    Ask for a person

Say you want to speak to someone. Confirm the right phone rings and the caller hears something sensible while it does.

  2. 2

    Let it ring out

Do not answer the transferred call. Confirm the fallback runs: a message is taken and reaches the right person quickly.

  3. 3

    Call outside your hours

Repeat after hours and on a holiday. Confirm the rules for when people are on actually apply.

  4. 4

    Check what the receiver knows

On a warm transfer, confirm the person hears who is calling and why before they speak.

  5. 5

    Say an emergency phrase

Use the words a real caller would use. Confirm it reaches the right person or gives the instruction you decided on.

  6. 6

    Sound upset

Get frustrated on purpose and see whether it hands off, or keeps trying to help.

  7. 7

    Ask twice

Decline the first offer and ask for a person again. A caller who asks twice should be put through.

  8. 8

    Read the record

Open the recording, transcript and message afterwards. Confirm they match what you heard and are saved where your team will look.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a warm transfer and a blind transfer?

In a warm transfer the first party briefs the receiver on who is calling and why before connecting the caller. In a blind (also called cold) transfer the caller is connected with no briefing, so the receiver starts without context and the caller may have to repeat themselves.

What happens if nobody answers the transferred call?

That depends on the product and how you set it up. Options on the pages we opened include trying a backup number, falling back to voicemail, or the AI taking a message. In Lead Friendly, when nobody is available the agent takes a message and texts it to you. Whatever you use, test the unanswered path.

Does every AI receptionist plan include call transfer?

Not necessarily. As of October 2026, several vendor pages we opened tie transfer to a plan or limit it as an agent action. Check the plan you are buying and ask what is included before you pay.

Should the AI tell callers it is an AI before transferring?

Yes, we think so. Lead Friendly opens every call with an AI disclosure. Laws on AI disclosure and call recording vary by state, so read our guides on recording consent and on whether AI may answer your phone.
