Short answer: Missed call text back sends an automatic text to anyone whose call you did not answer, usually within a minute, so the caller gets a reply before they ring the next business on their list. In the US the text must come from a number registered for business texting (10DLC or toll-free verification). The best setups do more than say sorry: they ask what the caller needs and keep the conversation going until someone, or an AI, books the job.

How missed call text back works

  1. 1

    A call goes unanswered

You are on a job, after hours, or on another line. The call rings out or goes to voicemail.

  2. 2

    A text goes out automatically

Within about a minute the caller gets a text from your business number asking what they need.

  3. 3

    The conversation continues

Replies land in a shared inbox. A person picks it up, or an AI keeps it going and books the appointment.

  4. 4

    Everything is logged

The call, the texts and the outcome sit on the contact record so nobody follows up twice.

What the first text should say

A text that only says sorry we missed your call gives the caller nothing to answer. Ask a question that moves the job forward, and name the business.

  • Good: "Hi, this is Northside Plumbing. Sorry we missed you. What's going on, and is it urgent?"
  • Good: "Thanks for calling Bright Smiles Dental. Are you a new patient or booking for an existing one?"
  • Weak: "We missed your call. Please call back during business hours."

The registration it needs (10DLC)

US carriers require businesses that text from ordinary local numbers to register a brand and a messaging campaign (10DLC); unregistered traffic is filtered or blocked. Toll-free numbers go through a separate verification. A reply to someone who just called you is conversational, but you still need STOP handling, and you should not add the caller to marketing texts without consent.

See the 10DLC registration fees guide for current brand and campaign costs.

Frequently asked questions

Is missed call text back legal?

Replying by text to someone who just called your business is generally treated as a conversational message, but you must honor STOP requests, send from a registered number, and get consent before adding the person to marketing texts. This is not legal advice.

Does it work with my existing phone number?

Yes. You keep your number and forward calls, or only unanswered ones, to the line that sends the text.

How fast should the text go out?

Within a minute or two. The point is to reply before the caller has dialed the next business on the list.
