How many independent dealers Texas has

The Texas Department of Motor Vehicles publishes every active General Distinguishing Number (GDN) licence as a downloadable list, refreshed daily. Filtering the September 13, 2026 list to active Motor Vehicle licences at a physical address leaves 14,183 locations. Of those, 2,269 are marked Franchise and the rest are independent.

We then removed independent licences whose business or trade name clearly describes something other than a retail car lot, such as truck and equipment yards, RV and trailer sellers, classic-car brokers, auctions, towing and collision shops. That leaves 10,919 independent retail lots. The name filter is conservative, so the true figure is likely a little higher, not lower.

Where the lots are

Independent dealers cluster where the buyers are. Harris County (Houston) and Dallas County together hold 3,725 lots, about a third of the state total, and ten of Texas's 254 counties hold 67.5%. The border counties stand out: Hidalgo, El Paso, Cameron and Webb all rank in the top ten, ahead of much larger suburban counties.

When the lots close

Hours are harder to count than licences, because the state list does not carry them. We visited the websites of 1,176 independent dealers whose licence email is on their own domain and read the posted sales hours. 282 sites published weekday hours we could read reliably, 372 loaded but posted no hours, and 518 did not load at all.

Among the 282, 6pm is the most common weekday closing time, followed by 5pm and 7pm. Only 16 close at 7:30pm or later. Treat this as a picture of independent dealers who maintain a website with posted hours, not of every lot in the state: stores without a working site, and franchise stores, were not in the sample and may keep different hours.

Sunday is mostly closed

210 of the 282 dealers either list Sunday as closed or publish a weekly schedule that leaves Sunday out. There is a legal reason: Texas Transportation Code section 728.002 prohibits a dealer from selling or offering vehicles for sale on both a Saturday and the following Sunday, so a store has to pick one, and most independents pick Saturday.

The practical effect is the same either way. A shopper browsing inventory on a Sunday afternoon reaches a closed lot at most of these stores, even though the phone number is right there on the listing.

What the closed hours mean for inbound calls

A lot that closes at 6pm and is shut on Sunday is closed for a large share of the hours people actually shop online. That is not a problem in itself; most small stores cannot staff evenings. The practical question is what happens to the calls and web leads that arrive while nobody is on the lot, because a shopper comparing three stores in one sitting usually calls the next one on the list.

   Measure your own after-hours volume

   Pull a full month of call logs from your phone provider and count calls that arrived after your posted close and on days you are closed. Your own number beats any industry average.

   Split sales calls from service calls

   An evening sales call is time-sensitive; a service question usually survives until morning. Route and measure them separately.

   Decide what an answered call should produce

   For sales, the useful outcome is a booked appointment or a captured name, number and vehicle of interest, not just a voicemail.

   Use your own close rate and front gross to estimate what the missed after-hours calls are worth before paying for any coverage.

How independent dealers run email

The business email a dealer registers with the state is a rough signal of how the store runs its back office. Only 16% of independent retail dealers use an address on their own domain. 45% use Gmail, 19% Yahoo and 10% Outlook or Hotmail, with the rest on internet-provider mailboxes. That matches what most independent stores look like from the inside: small teams, owner-run, with sales, service and paperwork handled by the same few people.

• Dealer counts: Texas DMV Independent (GDN) Motor Vehicle Dealers list, downloaded September 13, 2026. Included: licence type Motor Vehicle, status Active or Active - Pending Renewal, address type Physical. Franchise = dealer type Franchise.
• Independent retail: independent licences minus names containing terms such as equipment, trailer, RV, classic, collector, auction, towing, salvage, collision or parts.
• Email providers: classified from the domain of the business email on each licence.
• Posted hours: websites derived from own-domain business emails (domains shared by more than one licence excluded), fetched September 13, 2026. Hours read from schema.org opening-hours markup or visible sales-hours text; service and parts hours ignored; weekday closes before 4pm discarded as likely misreads.
