Short answer: Most AI receptionists say they handle Spanish, but the claims differ a lot. As of October 2026, Rosie and Smith.ai state English and Spanish, Dialzara states 10 or more languages, My AI Front Desk says 20+, Upfirst says English, Spanish and 35+ others, and Retell says 55+. Lead Friendly offers 17 languages, set as one language, a pair such as English and Spanish, or multilingual detect. A language list does not tell you how well each language performs, so test with a real Spanish speaker before you sign.
What each vendor says it supports
We opened each vendor's own pricing, product or documentation page on 2026-10-15 and recorded the language claims. These are vendor statements, not our tests, and we make no claim about accent quality or accuracy in any language. 'Not stated' means the page we opened did not say. Verify the current list for your plan with the vendor.

How the counts compare
Counts are the numbers each vendor states, and 'plus' figures are shown at their floor. Treat the chart as what vendors claim, not as a ranking of quality: a vendor with 2 languages can be excellent in both, and one with 55+ may support many of them only through particular voices.
Upfirst counts English, Spanish and '35+ other languages'. Synthflow counts entries in its docs list, where English and Portuguese variants are listed separately. Lead Friendly's count is from our own language list.

How bilingual calls work
There are three common set-ups. The first is a single language per agent, with a separate agent or phone number per language. The second is a fixed pair, such as English and Spanish, where the agent greets in one language and follows the caller into the other. The third is multilingual detect, where the system works out which language the caller is speaking from their first sentence and answers in it. Dialzara and Upfirst describe detection and switching on their pages. In Lead Friendly an agent can be set to one language, a pair such as English and Spanish, or multilingual detect, and the voice choices follow the languages you pick.
Retell's documentation is candid about the trade-off: a single-language agent has the best accuracy, and mixing languages from different families, such as English and Spanish, uses a multilingual recognition pipeline that is 'less accurate per language'. Its guidance is to select only the languages you need. Synthflow's docs recommend its own speech-to-text for non-English languages. If your callers are mostly one language, that points toward a dedicated agent or number for it; if they are mixed, a pair is simpler.
Two other things differ by vendor and are worth asking about. Voice quality varies per language, because a voice made for one language may only support some others; Retell's docs say each voice supports a subset of languages. And a transfer needs a person: if the AI hands off to your front desk, someone there has to speak Spanish, or the call dead-ends. Decide who that is and when they are available.
A test script for a Spanish caller
Ask a native or fluent Spanish speaker you trust to call, and record it with their permission. Use your real services, street names and staff names; generic phrases are where every system looks good.
- 1
Call and say nothing for three seconds
Note the greeting language, whether the AI-voice disclosure is given in a language the caller understands, and how it handles silence.
- 2
Answer the greeting in Spanish
Does it switch cleanly, or answer in English? Does it keep using Spanish for the rest of the call?
- 3
Ask about a specific service and price range
Use a service from your own list. Check the answer is correct, not just fluent.
- 4
Spell a name and give a phone number in Spanish
Names with accents, double letters or an unusual spelling are common failure points. Check what the agent reads back.
- 5
Switch to English mid-sentence, then back
Many callers mix languages. See whether the agent follows or gets stuck.
- 6
Book an appointment end to end
Dates and times are said differently across languages. Confirm the booking that lands on the calendar is the one the caller asked for.
- 7
Ask for a person
See where the call goes, who answers, whether they speak Spanish, and what happens outside their hours.
- 8
Read the transcript and listen to the recording
Check whether the transcript, summary and any text follow-up come out in a language your staff can read, and have your Spanish speaker mark anything that sounded wrong.
Where other options may be better
If your callers need a human who is fluent in a particular language, a human service may fit better: Ruby's pricing page lists Spanish and bilingual call handling on its receptionist plans, and Smith.ai lists a dedicated Spanish line with a fluent Spanish-speaking agent, as of October 2026. Both cost more per call than software at the published prices we compared in our virtual receptionist guide. If you need a language outside Lead Friendly's 17, check that list before you start a trial.
Frequently asked questions
Can an AI receptionist answer calls in Spanish?
Several say they can. As of October 2026, Rosie and Smith.ai state English and Spanish, Dialzara, Upfirst, My AI Front Desk and Retell state longer lists, and Lead Friendly offers Spanish among 17 languages. Claims are vendor-reported, so test with a real Spanish speaker.
Can one agent handle both English and Spanish callers?
Yes in most set-ups, either as a fixed pair or with language detection. Retell's docs note that mixing language families is less accurate per language than a single-language agent, so test your own mix.
What languages does Lead Friendly support?
English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Hindi, Punjabi, Japanese, Korean, Mandarin Chinese, Arabic, Italian, Dutch, Polish, Russian, Swedish and Turkish. An agent can be set to one language, a pair such as English and Spanish, or multilingual detect.
Will callers know it is an AI in Spanish?
Every Lead Friendly AI call opens with a disclosure that the caller is speaking with an AI voice. Check in your test call that the disclosure sounds right in the language you use.
