Short answer: Nobody in this category publishes a clean price. Of five dedicated car-dealer photo tools we scored on background quality, licence-plate handling, phone capture, listing hand-off and price visibility — Spyne, Cropy AI, CarBG, CarCutter and Photoroom — only Spyne states an automatic licence-plate mask, and none list a monthly dollar figure without a sales call or a vague credit tier. If you already pay for a DMS, DealersCloud's beta AI Photo Booth and Carsforsale.com's AI Images, part of its published $99-a-month suite, may already cover this without a new vendor.

Why this needed a scorecard, not a ranking

A developer looking for beta testers for a dealer photo-background tool posted on the DealerRefresh forum this year, and app-store listings for at least half a dozen competing tools show real install counts and ratings, which is a sign dealers are actually shopping this category, not just searching it out of curiosity.

We opened the product and pricing pages of nine tools built mainly around replacing a lot or garage background with something cleaner, plus two dealer-software suites that bundle the same feature, on October 19, 2026, and recorded only what each page actually states that day. The honest finding is that the pages are hard to compare on purpose: the same feature gets different names, licence-plate handling ranges from a real privacy mask to a logo sticker, and price is almost always hidden behind a sales call. So we scored the five dedicated tools with the clearest public pages on five things you can check yourself before buying, then put all nine plus the two DMS-bundled options in a wider table below.

The scorecard: five dealer photo tools, five checks

Five car-dealer photo tools scored on what their own pages state

Background quality claimed
Licence-plate handling
Phone-camera capture
Listing / DMS hand-off
Price visibility

How we scored: Each criterion scored 0-5 from what each vendor's own product and pricing pages stated when we opened them October 19, 2026: 5 = explicitly confirmed and specific, lower for vague or partial claims, 0 for not mentioned. Price visibility rewards an actual published number, not a named tier. We did not run the tools ourselves.

CarCutter and Spyne lead on automotive-specific claims; Photoroom is a general-purpose editor, not built for dealers.

What "plate handling" and "phone capture" actually mean here

1 of 5

of the scored tools states a true automatic licence-plate mask, rather than a logo or decal placed over the plate

Source: Spyne, pricing (LITE/PRO plans); Cropy AI, product page; CarBG, product page; CarCutter, product page; Photoroom, pricing page

Spyne's pricing page describes "Automatic License Plate Masking" on both of its plans, which reads as an actual privacy feature. Cropy AI and CarBG both call the same area of the photo a "License Plate Inlay" that detects the plate and swaps in a logo or a replacement graphic you control — useful for branding, but not the same thing as hiding a real plate number. CarCutter and Photoroom do not mention plate handling at all.

Phone capture is confirmed in plain language by Spyne ("directly from a smartphone"), CarBG (an "Image Capturing" feature plus a mobile app) and CarCutter ("right from your mobile phone," with AR capture guidance). Cropy AI links to iOS and Android apps but its own page never states that a phone camera is the capture method. Photoroom is a general mobile photo editor, not an automotive tool, so phone capture works but none of the automotive-specific handling above does.

Two options if you already pay for a DMS

If your store already runs on a DMS, check what it already does before adding a photo vendor. DealersCloud's own site lists an "AI Photo Booth (Beta)" that swaps the background to a Premium Lot, Showroom Studio or White Studio look while leaving the car itself untouched, with a free trial and custom pricing by dealership size rather than a published figure.

Carsforsale.com's dealer-software page states its "AI Images" feature "creates clean, sharp, and sale-ready photos, along with SEO-friendly meta descriptions," as part of a dealer software suite it prices at $99 a month with no setup fee or contract, as of October 2026. Verify the current feature list and price on their site before buying, since dealer-software pricing pages change.

Where Lead Friendly fits

Lead Friendly's dealer plan includes a one-tap version of the same idea: a phone photo in, a white background or a themed scene out, with the car itself left unaltered, plus a drag-to-rotate 360° spin built from a phone walkaround video. Photos live on your own site and push to CarGurus. The AI background work is billed per photo on top of the plan; see /pricing for both figures.

It has no automatic licence-plate masking, so a store that specifically needs that should look at Spyne first among the tools above. It is also not a standalone photo app — it is one step in a phone-first VIN-scan-to-live-listing flow, so a store that wants a dedicated photo tool decoupled from its CRM may prefer CarCutter or Spyne instead.

How to actually test one before you switch

  1. 1

Pull your worst ten listing photos, not vendor demo shots

Low light, another car in frame, a trailer or trash can in the background. That is what a background tool has to handle on an ordinary day, and it is the fastest way to see past a polished demo.

  2. 2

Get the plate answer in writing

Ask directly whether the tool detects and removes or blurs a real licence plate, or only overlays a logo or decal over it. Get the answer by email, not from a sales call, so you can hold them to it.

  3. 3

    Time one real capture-to-listing loop

Shoot a single car the way your staff actually would, run it through the tool, and get the result onto your site or DMS feed end to end. That number, not a marketing claim, is what changes your week.

  4. 4

Ask what a real month costs

"Custom pricing" usually means volume-based. Ask what a 50-car month and a 150-car month would each cost before you sign anything, in writing, with the credit or photo count attached.

  5. 5

    Check who owns the output

Confirm whether processed photos export automatically to your DMS or listing feed, or have to be downloaded and re-uploaded by hand every time.

Methodology

  • We opened each vendor's own product and pricing pages directly on October 19, 2026, and recorded only what that page stated that day.
  • We did not use third-party pricing-aggregator estimates: several Capterra, G2 and SaaS-pricing-tracker listings for these same tools disagreed with each other and with the vendors' own pages, so most price cells read 'no published price' rather than a guessed number.
  • Scorecard criteria and scores are our judgement, explained in the chart's method note; no scorecard score requires a numeric source under this site's publishing rules, but every digit in the comparison table traces to the vendor page cited in that section's sources.
  • Lead Friendly facts come from our own /pricing page and the /vs/spyne comparison page, both read the same day.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best app for car dealer vehicle photos with background replacement?

There is no single best answer; it depends on what you need most. CarCutter and Spyne make the strongest automotive-specific claims on background quality and confirmed phone capture. Spyne is the only one of the five we scored that states an automatic licence-plate mask. None publish a clear monthly price without a sales call.

Do car dealer photo apps blur licence plates automatically?

Mostly not in a privacy sense. Of the five tools we scored, only Spyne states an automatic licence-plate masking feature. Cropy AI and CarBG offer a plate 'inlay' that swaps in a logo or graphic, which is a branding feature, not a privacy mask. CarCutter, Photoroom and Lead Friendly do not mask plates at all.

Can I use my phone to shoot inventory photos for these tools?

For most of them, yes. Spyne, CarBG, CarCutter and Lead Friendly all state on their own pages that capture works from a regular phone camera. Cropy AI has iOS and Android apps but its page does not explicitly confirm phone-camera capture as the method.

How much do dealer photo background tools cost?

Almost none of the dedicated tools publish a price. Spyne, Cropy AI, CarBG and CarCutter all route to a sales call or an unpriced credit tier. The two exceptions we found are bundled, not standalone: Carsforsale.com publishes $99 a month for its dealer software suite, which includes its AI Images feature. Lead Friendly publishes its own dealer plan and per-photo AI charge on /pricing.
