VIN scan to live listing: what seven dealer inventory apps actually do

Short answer: A small independent dealer does not need a full DMS just to scan a VIN and get photos online. Of the seven VIN-scan tools we checked this run, all seven decode a VIN with a phone camera, but only three — DealerCenter's app, Carsforsale.com's Dealer app and Lead Friendly — say where a scanned vehicle ends up beyond the maker's own system. The rest feed a DMS, a standalone app, or name no destination at all. Pick based on where the car needs to show up, not on whether the app can scan a VIN, because nearly all of them can.
Why the scan is the easy part

Scanning a VIN with a phone camera to skip typing 17 characters is a solved problem. Every inventory tool we opened this run does it, from a free iPad app for wholesalers to the mobile add-on bundled with a six-figure DMS. The feature that varies, and the one worth checking before you pick a tool, is what happens in the seconds after the scan: whether the photos you shoot land in a usable spot, and whether the finished listing shows up anywhere a buyer will actually see it.
We opened the dealer-facing page or app-store listing for seven tools this run: Frazer Sidekick, DealerCenter's mobile app, Carsforsale.com's Dealer app, MotorLot, Get My Auto VIN+, Car Inventory To Go and Lead Friendly. We recorded only what each page says, not what we assume the product probably also does.

The six steps from VIN to live listing
However a dealer gets there, a scanned vehicle has to pass through the same six steps before a shopper can see it. Any gap in that chain, usually the last one, is where a tool that "does VIN scanning" can still leave a car sitting unlisted.
- 1
Scan the VIN
Point a phone camera at the VIN barcode or plate, or type it in by hand when the barcode is scratched or missing.
- 2
Decode and confirm
Year, make, model and trim come back from the VIN; confirm them against the actual vehicle, since a decoder can be wrong on a mid-year or regional trim change.
- 3
Set price and mileage
Enter the asking price, mileage and any cost fields the tool tracks before the listing can go live.
- 4
Shoot and arrange photos
Capture photos with the same phone, then reorder them and pick the main listing image.
- 5
Publish to your own site
Push the vehicle, its price and its photos onto the dealer's own website, if the tool has one to push to.
- 6
Feed or push to listing sites
Send the finished listing to CarGurus, Cars.com, Facebook Marketplace or whichever marketplaces the dealer actually pays to be on.
What seven tools say about each step
This is what each vendor's own app page or app-store listing states, not a feature we inferred. "Not described" means the page we read does not mention that step either way, not that the tool cannot do it.
| Tool | Platform | Photos on phone | Publishes to | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Frazer Sidekick | iOS and Android | Not described ("photos auto-added to your Frazer DMS") | Not described; adds to Frazer DMS inventory only | Free with a Frazer DMS subscription |
| DealerCenter mobile app | iOS and Android | Not described ("full inventory merchandizing") | Auto-syncs to DealerCenter websites; access to 30+ marketplaces including CarGurus, Facebook Marketplace and OfferUp | Not published on the app page; priced separately |
| Carsforsale.com Dealer app | iPad and iPhone (Apple listing) | Yes — snap, add and reorder photos | Carsforsale.com and the dealer's own website; other feeds not named on this page | Tied to a Carsforsale.com dealer subscription; amount not published on the app page |
| MotorLot | iPhone only | Yes — multiple photos per vehicle, reorder, set listing photo | MotorLot's own system only; dealer website or marketplace feeds not named | Requires a MotorLot dealer account; price not published |
| Get My Auto VIN+ | iPhone (Apple listing) | Not mentioned on this page | Not named on this page; data syncs between phone and desktop for appraisal | Not published on this page |
| Car Inventory To Go | iPhone and iPad | Yes — from camera or photo library, up to 10 images per vehicle | Not mentioned (exports reports for QuickBooks accounting only) | Free app as part of a Car Inventory To Go subscription; amount not published |
| Lead Friendly | Phone browser; no native app | Yes — one-tap AI background cleanup, billed per photo from the wallet | Dealer's own site immediately; CarGurus pushed twice a day; Cars.com, Google vehicle listings and other feed-reading sites by feed URL; Facebook Marketplace in progress | Included in the dealer plan; see /pricing |
DMS-bundled, standalone, or browser-based: the real split
The seven tools split into three groups, and the group matters more than any single feature. Frazer Sidekick is a mobile front end for the Frazer DMS: free with a subscription, and built to get a vehicle and its photos into that DMS, not to publish anywhere else on its own. DealerCenter's app is similar but goes further, since DealerCenter also names a list of marketplaces its platform reaches.
MotorLot and Car Inventory To Go are standalone scanning apps with no DMS behind them. That makes them quick to start with and cheap or free, but a vehicle that lives only in MotorLot's own system, or that only exports to QuickBooks, still needs a separate step to reach a dealer website or a marketplace. Carsforsale.com's Dealer app and Lead Friendly are the two that name a publish destination beyond their own system on the page we read: Carsforsale.com ties into its own website product, and Lead Friendly runs from a phone's browser rather than a native app and pushes to its own site and named marketplaces directly.
Where a DMS-bundled scanner wins over a browser-based one
None of this makes a browser-based or standalone tool the right pick for every store. A dealer whose accounting, titling and deal paperwork already run inside Frazer, DealerCenter or another DMS usually gains more from that DMS's own mobile scanner, because the vehicle lands in the same system as the rest of the deal file instead of needing a second place to reconcile. See our side-by-side pages on DealerCenter and Frazer for what each DMS covers beyond inventory.
Lead Friendly fits a different shape of store: one that wants VIN scan, photo cleanup, pricing and a website in one phone-first flow without buying a DMS, and is fine with inventory moving to DealerCenter by feed rather than a two-way write-back. It has no native app, no accounting ledger and no buy-here-pay-here note servicing, so a store that needs those stays better served by a DMS with its scanner included.
Questions to ask before you pick one
- Does it name the exact marketplaces you already pay for, by name, on its own page? "30+ marketplaces" or "feed-reading sites" is not the same as confirming the one you use.
- Does a scanned vehicle reach your own website automatically, or only a DMS, an app's own system, or an accounting export?
- Is AI photo background cleanup included, or billed per photo on top of a plan or subscription?
- If the tool is bundled with a DMS, does losing that DMS later mean losing the scanner too?
- Is the published price a flat subscription, a quote-only DMS bundle, or billed per photo or per listing?
Methodology
- We opened each vendor's own dealer-facing page or Apple App Store listing on October 21, 2026, and recorded only what that specific page states about VIN scanning, phone photo capture, publish destinations and price. "Not described" or "not mentioned" means the page we read is silent on that point, not that the feature does not exist elsewhere on the vendor's site.
- We found a 2012 trade-press launch for an Android app called AutoManager.Mobile with similar VIN-scan and photo features, plus an unofficial third-party app-store mirror showing a 2026 update. We could not reach an official, current AutoManager page or app-store listing for it this run, so we left it out rather than describe a decade-old press release as current.
- We could not confirm an official Google Play listing for the Carsforsale.com Dealer app this run; the platform row reflects only the Apple App Store listing we opened.
- Lead Friendly facts are drawn from its own published dealer page, read the same day as the other six.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a DMS to scan a VIN and add photos from my phone?
No. Standalone apps like MotorLot and Car Inventory To Go, and browser-based tools like Lead Friendly, scan a VIN and capture photos without a DMS behind them. A DMS-bundled scanner such as Frazer Sidekick or DealerCenter's app adds the convenience of landing straight in the system that already runs your deal file and accounting, if you have one.
Can a VIN-scan app publish straight to CarGurus or Facebook Marketplace?
Some do, some don't say. DealerCenter's own page lists access to more than 30 marketplaces including CarGurus and Facebook Marketplace. Lead Friendly pushes to CarGurus twice a day and reaches Cars.com and Google vehicle listings by feed, with Facebook Marketplace in progress. MotorLot, Get My Auto VIN+, Frazer Sidekick and Car Inventory To Go do not name a marketplace destination on the pages we read.
Is there a free VIN scanner app for a car dealer?
Frazer Sidekick is free, but only with an active Frazer DMS subscription. Car Inventory To Go is a free app, but it is described as part of a paid Car Inventory To Go subscription whose price is not published on the app page. Neither is free on its own with no other product behind it.
What is the difference between a DMS-bundled scanner and a standalone one?
A DMS-bundled scanner, like Frazer Sidekick or DealerCenter's app, is a mobile front end for a dealer management system you already pay for, and the vehicle lands in that same system. A standalone scanner, like MotorLot or Car Inventory To Go, has no DMS behind it, so it is quicker to start with but may need a separate step to get a vehicle onto a website or marketplace the standalone app does not reach.
